Cold Weather – Many of our stations are still experiencing cold temperatures, snow, and rain.  Be aware of warning signs for possible hypothermia and frostbite. Dress in layers and be aware of damp/wet clothing. Utilize headwear as large amounts of heat can escape through the head.  In addition to low temperature, wind and humidity are additional factors to consider when preparing to work in cold weather conditions.

Address Update – Did you move recently? Federal Aviation Regulation 65.21 requires that all certificate holders update their permanent mailing address within 30 days. In addition, be sure to notify your respective company as well as AMFA National of any contact information updates.  To update your address, visit the following websites:

FAA: www.faa.gov/mechanics/records/change_license
AMFA: www.amfanational.org/docs/Forms___Downloads_docs/change_address_Form_2012.pdf

FAA Safety Team (FAAST) – The FAA has a section of their website that is dedicated to safety awareness. There is a section specifically for Aircraft Maintenance Technicians containing information for continuing education, including online courses. Visit the following link for more information: www.faasafety.gov/AMT/pub/mh.aspx

Reporting Safety Concerns – If you observe a safety concern, report it. Southwest and Alaska have internal methods that can be utilized to notify the company of any safety concern. Each company also has an Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP). Additionally, the FAA Hotline reporting system – hotline.faa.gov – may be utilized by anyone to report concerns of aviation safety. This FAA Hotline link can also be found on the Safety & Standards page of the AMFA National website.

In closing, do not let distractions lead you away from the task at hand. The FAA Dirty Dozen list identifies distractions as the #1 cause of forgetting things, including what has or has not been done in a maintenance task. The complete FAA Dirty Dozen list may be viewed at: www.faasafety.gov/files/gslac/library/documents/2012/Nov/71574/DirtyDozenWeb3.pdf

As always stay safe and watch out for yourselves and each other.

In Solidarity,

Scott King
National Safety & Standards Director
