Transport Workers Union Local 555 the Third Key Labor Association to Come Forward in Support Of AMFA in Its Contract Dispute With Southwest Airlines

TWU Local 555 Criticizes Southwest Airlines Management as “Strong-Armed and Heavy-Handed”

AURORA, CO – January 13, 2017 – The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) has received their third key supporter in its ongoing contract negotiations with Southwest Airlines and CEO Gary Kelly. The Transport Workers Union Local 555 has written a letter to show their support of the men and women of AMFA as they are still pursuing a contract with Southwest Airlines after more than four years of negotiations.

Greg Puriski, President of TWU Local 555, sent a letter to AMFA National Director Bret Oestreich in support of the mechanics. There is great camaraderie and support between the organizations after AMFA assisted TWU in their own contract negotiations a year ago. See attached for the full version of the letter of support. Below is an excerpt from the letter:

“First and foremost, we at TWU Local 555 would like to express our full support towards your efforts to secure a fair and equitable contract. Your work and dedicated service ensure Southwest Airlines is one of the safest airlines in the business! Every time I fly and catch a glimpse of the proud Southwest Mechanics of AMFA working on our aircraft, I feel an overwhelming sense of security that only your service could accomplish.”

AMFA filed suit late in 2016 in the United States District Court for the District of Arizona seeking declaratory and injunctive relief against Southwest Airlines, claiming SWA’s actions violate the Railway Labor Act. At issue are allegations of bad faith bargaining and repeated efforts by SWA to provide false and misleading information about contract negotiations directly to their airline mechanics.
