National Director's June 2016 Update
Updated On: Jun 182, 2016

June 30, 2016

Dear Members:

May 31 to June 2, 2016, Alaska Airlines contract negotiations continued near San Jose, California, where we worked on Scope, Status, and Job Security. Due to the vital importance of these matters in our contract, this session became quite contentious as we debated our perspectives on the issues within these articles. The Committee’s full update has been posted to the National Website.  We are also meeting this week, June 28 to June 30, 2016, to start preliminary discussions on the topics of medical benefits and retirement.  The update from this session should be out next week, and we are scheduled to meet again July 18 – 21, 2016.  There have been no relevant developments in the proposed Alaska Airlines purchase of Virgin America; we will keep you posted as new developments transpire.

The Referendum Notice and Voting Instructions for the Constitutional Amendment Ratification Referendum were mailed on June, 16, 2016.  There are sixteen (16) proposed amendments for your consideration. Ballots for this referendum will be tallied on July 14, 2016. Also, the Referendum Notice and Voting Instructions for the AMFA National Officer Election will be mailed by July 1, 2016.  If you do not receive your personalized voting instructions in the mail by July 12, 2016, please be sure to contact the Administration Director at 720-744-6629 to request a ballot. Voting will conclude at 10:00am et August 8, 2016. Please be sure to make your voice heard and participate in these important AMFA votes.

The next scheduled Southwest Airlines (SWA) Aircraft Maintenance Technician negotiation session is not until July 26–28, 2016, in Dallas, Texas.  July 14, 2016 is the next session for the Facility Maintenance Technician negotiations.  In the meantime, our SWA members have been showing their solidarity by wearing AMFA buttons.  The Company expressed concerns with this to our Airline Representatives and asked for assistance with stopping the practice.  We informed SWA with a letter from AMFA legal that we would not help in stopping the wearing of AMFA buttons because the wearing of union buttons is considered protected activity under the Railway Labor Act; the matter is being addressed through the grievance process.  Additionally, AMFA National and Local 11 leadership are coordinating an informational leafleting event scheduled for Friday, July 22, 2016, in Dallas, Texas to demonstrate our great displeasure with the Company’s attitude toward our negotiations.

For more carrier-specific updates and further information regarding AMFA and the airline industry, please visit the AMFA National Website at www.AMFANational.org and download the AMFA App to your smartphone or tablet. Our most determined efforts will only succeed with your continued support and participation – please stay informed.

Sincerely,

Louie Key
National Director
